What Is Medicare?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older and for certain individuals under 65 with disabilities or specific medical conditions. It’s made up of several parts, each covering different healthcare needs.
The Four Parts of Medicare
Part A — Hospital Insurance
Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health services. Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they’ve worked and paid Medicare taxes long enough.
Part B — Medical Insurance
Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, lab work, and durable medical equipment. Part B typically comes with a monthly premium.
Part C — Medicare Advantage (MA)
Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare, these plans combine your Part A and Part B coverage — and often include extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, gym memberships, transportation, and even grocery or over-the-counter allowances.
Our team specializes in helping Louisianans compare these plans and find one that fits their needs and budget.
Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage
Helps cover the cost of medications and is available as a standalone plan or included in most Medicare Advantage plans.
Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is run by the federal government. You can see any doctor who accepts Medicare, but it doesn’t include routine dental, vision, or hearing coverage — and there’s no cap on out-of-pocket costs.
Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered through private insurers. They include all the same protections as Original Medicare plus extra benefits, and they place a yearly limit on out-of-pocket expenses. You’ll typically use a network of doctors, similar to a PPO or HMO plan.
When Can You Enroll?
Timing matters! Here are the main enrollment windows to keep in mind:
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Begins 3 months before your 65th birthday and ends 3 months after.
- Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): Every year from October 15 – December 7, you can review or change your plan.
- Special Enrollment Periods (SEP): Available if you move, lose employer coverage, or experience other qualifying life events.
- Open Enrollment for Medicare Advantage (OEP): Every year from January 1 – March 31. If you’re already in an Advantage plan, you can make a one-time switch.
